Tip for pet owners

Choose a unit rated for a room one size larger than your actual space — pets generate continuous airborne particles that demand higher air-change rates.

Why Standard HEPA Falls Short for Pet Owners

Most purifiers claim "HEPA filtration" — but for pets, the particle size threshold is everything.

Standard HEPA
99.97%
Captures down to 0.3 microns — misses pet allergens
Pet hair (30–600μm)
Large dander flakes (10μm+)
Fine dander (0.1–10μm)
Pet saliva proteins (0.01–1μm)
Ultra-fine odour particles

How an Air Purifier Tackles Pet Hair at Home

Even in a clean home, microscopic pet particles stay suspended in the air for hours. Pet hair attaches to furniture and clothing, while dander — tiny flecks of dried skin — circulates continuously through your HVAC. A Coway unit runs silently 24/7 to break this cycle.

An air purifier draws room air continuously through a HEPA-grade filter, lowering airborne allergen concentration over time.

Why living rooms matter most

Your pet sheds up to 80% of their daily dander output in the rooms where you spend the most time together. Place your purifier there first.

Pet Hair
Pet Hair
Visible strands (30–600μm) that land on surfaces and re-enter the air when disturbed. Caught instantly by the pre-filter stage, extending the life of the HEPA layer.
Pet Odours
Pet Odours
VOCs from ammonia, wet-dog smell, and litter trays (0.0004–0.001μm) — too small even for HEPA. Neutralised by our activated-carbon deodorisation layer before they reach your nose.
Pet Dander
Pet Dander
Microscopic skin flakes (0.1–10μm) — the real trigger of cat and dog allergies. Invisible to the naked eye and light enough to float for days. GreenHEPA™ captures 99.99%.
Airborne Bacteria & Mould
Airborne Bacteria & Mould
Pet bedding, litter trays, and damp areas harbour bacteria and mould spores (1–30μm). Captured by GreenHEPA™ and further neutralised by Coway's UV ionisation on select models.

The UK Pet Shedding Calendar

Pet hair doesn't stop at any season — but shedding intensity peaks at different times of year.

Mar – May
Spring Blowout
Peak shedding season. Dogs and cats lose their winter undercoat in large volumes. Daily filter checks recommended.
Jul – Aug
Summer Maintenance
Moderate shedding continues. Warmer rooms increase dander dispersal and pet odour concentration indoors.
Sep – Nov
August Coat Change
Second major shed as pets grow their winter coat. Increased indoor time means more airborne dander accumulation.
Dec – Feb
Winter Indoors
Lowest outdoor shedding, but sealed heating systems concentrate pet allergens indoors. Air quality at its worst without a purifier.

What Pet Owners Say

Verified reviews from cat owners, dog owners, and multi-pet households across the UK.

"The purifier itself is very powerful. Great design. The sensor is very sensitive so will notice any changes to the air quality. Filtration is very good, noticed a dust on the filter after one day of use. I recommend to pet 🐶 owners."

"My partner has all sorts of allergies and suffers a lot, having to take antihistamines etc especially at night in the summer time. We also have cats and ongoing battle with mould in the house. Since using this product I’ve seen a dramatic improvement in my partners symptoms, so I’m sure it works! The amount of dust, cat fur and other nasty things that accumulates on the washable pre filter is disgusting! I regularly vacuum the house so it’s surprising the amount that this collects."

Sam Greenfield
Airmega Mighty
Amazon UK

"So far so good, the unit moves much more air than the Blueair 411 and the auto function seems to respond quickly to an increase in particulate in the air (especially when the dog is roaming around). I've found the unit quieter overall than the old filter, even during a higher airflow setting it's much more of a sound of moving air as opposed to a mechanical sound."

Pet Air Purifier FAQs

Everything you need to know before choosing.

Yes — but the distinction matters. Air purifiers don't remove pet hair already settled on sofas or floors; that still requires vacuuming. What they do is continuously capture airborne hair, dander, and saliva proteins before they settle or enter your lungs. Most pet allergy sufferers notice a meaningful reduction in symptoms within 2–4 weeks of running a purifier in their main living area.

All Coway models include an activated-carbon deodorisation layer specifically designed to neutralise pet-related VOCs — including ammonia from urine, the protein compounds behind wet-dog smell, and litter tray odours. This layer works independently of the HEPA filter. For heavy odour environments (multiple large dogs, indoor rabbits or birds), we recommend the Airmega Mighty range with enhanced carbon capacity.

In pet-free households, Coway filters typically last 12 months. With one small pet, expect 8–10 months. With multiple pets or heavy shedders, plan for 6–8 months. The filter indicator on every Coway model monitors actual air quality and will alert you when a replacement is needed — no guesswork required. Coway's Filter Subscription service delivers replacements automatically at a 15% discount.

Fel d 1 — the primary cat allergen found in cat saliva and skin — is exceptionally small (0.1–1μm). Standard HEPA misses a significant portion of it. The Airmega 150 and Airmega Mighty both use GreenHEPA™ filtration rated to 0.01μm, making them our most effective options for cat allergen capture. Place the unit in the room where your cat spends the most time for maximum impact.

All Coway air purifiers are safe to run continuously around cats, dogs, birds, and other household pets. Our ionisation technology operates at levels well below any thresholds of concern for animal health. The units are sealed so pets cannot access the filters, and there are no exposed heating elements. For birds, which are particularly sensitive to airborne particles, an air purifier is especially beneficial.
